Resume Writing Tips & Ideas

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Joshua Nay Make sure that your resume is up to date with your latest job experience and educational accomplishments. Have a friend or relative evaluate your resume to see if it is clear, consistent, and fairly represents your skills and experience. Is your resume in a high impact format? Be sure to do a spell check on your resume. Misspelled works can reflect negatively on you and diminish your prospects. Many companies have a form on their web sites for submitting electronic resumes. Have a version of your resume that you can cut and paste into submittal forms. Create one that doesn’t have columns and indents as these do not work well when pasted into a form. Let your family, friends, alumni groups, and industry contacts know you are looking for a job. Send them your resume. Many jobs are unadvertised and these people may know of potential openings. Also many employers would rather hire someone suggested to them by a person they trust. Summit your resume electronically to companies rather than via paper if possible. Check out their web sites to see if they have a resume submittal form. Submit it through the form, if not send them an electronic version in Word or as a text file. Many large companies put electronic resumes into a database which then can be searched by managers looking to hire additional people. Using the database managers can do keyword searches to quickly find candidates. Most managers do not want to take the time to wade through hundreds of paper resumes looking for candidates. Most paper resumes never even get looked at in some of these large companies. A local large airplane manufacturer and a local large software company rely heavily on their resume database for new candidates. Post your resume to resume databases. Generally the posting is free. This is a lot more cost effective then spending hundreds of dollars in printing and postage costs blindly sending out resumes to companies. Recruiters search these databases looking for candidates to fill positions.. A potentially even more effective approach is to use a resume distribution service. For a small price you can blast your resume out to 1000’s of recruiters. This can be more effective than waiting for a recruiter to stumble across your resume in a database. It also only costs a fraction of the amount it would for printing and postage to do a mass mailing of your resume. Most of these services give you some control over what industries and geographic regions your resume is sent to. Many jobs are unadvertised as employers don’t want to be bombarded by thousands of resumes. Therefore it is important for you to get your resume in the hands of your contacts. Also get your resume into the databases that potential employers can search. Look in the job databases for potential openings. You can search through thousands of potential jobs using field and location selection criteria.. Many local employers post job openings in this database because the state does not charge a fee for the service. If you are in college or have graduated from a local college check out their career services department. Many have web sites with links to recruiters, upcoming recruiter visits, job postings, and much more. Most major and even local newspapers have online editions with help wanted sections. These can be superior to paper editions because you can often do keyword searches allowing you to zero in on potential jobs. This is much more efficient than reading hundreds of job ads in paper editions. Landing that first job can be hard. Many employers look for “experienced” candidates. If you have had internships be sure to emphasize them in your resume. If you have assisted a professor in research or teaching emphasize that in your resume. Many of your smaller companies feel they don’t have the time or resources to train you. They need someone that can be productive now! Generally your larger companies have resources and internal training programs to get inexperienced employees up to speed. Your may have a better chance getting on with a larger company. Your first job may not be your “dream” job. Look for one that can give you experience and make you attractive to an employer a few years down the road. Large companies are often a great place to start because they tend to be the most willing to hire and train new graduates. Unfortunately they are often not the best place to have a career. Many large companies are stagnant or grow slowly. Promotions and career growth is often slow and you have to wait for someone ahead of you to retire. If you go to work for a large company do it for a few years to get some practical experience to add to your resume. If your career has not advanced significantly after a few years look for new opportunities. It is often easy to get stuck at a large company because they offer stability, decent salary, and good benefits. Once you have some experience look for a young fast growing company to join. Often you can ride their success upwards to a much higher position and salary compared to staying with an older slow growth company. Look at what happened to the people that joined Microsoft early on. If you have visions of having your own business some day find out who is the best company in your industry. Go to work for them and learn what they have done to be successful. Also look for how you could do things better than they do. Then after a few years take the plunge and start your own company. The Perfect Woman Trap

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

By Don Diebel I want to warn you about falling into the trap of forming an image in your mind of the perfect woman for you. For example, you’re only attracted to tall blondes with long hair, blue eyes, and a perfect body. Your mind and eyes are closed to all other women who don’t fit your “perfect mate” image. You block them out. This is really sad if you adopt this philosophy of only being attracted to certain types of women. You will bypass so many opportunities to meet single women that could be just perfect for you. First of all, it’s not fair to judge a person on how they look on the outside anyway. Their inner beauty is what counts. Tell me, is it worth it having a girlfriend with looks that could kill and be a “bitch from hell” on the inside. I can’t begin to tell you how many women I’ve dated like this. While we are on the subject of looks, don’t fall into the trap of only limiting yourself to dating only beautiful single women. Trust me, women that seem to be average-looking when first meeting them can become beautiful to you once you get to know them. What they don’t have in looks they make up with their good personality, warm heart, ability to please you sexually, enthusiasm for life, affections, willingness to do anything to please you, etc. From my experience of dating a lot of model types of women, I can tell you that a lot of them were self-centered, obsessed with their looks, used to getting their way, and spoiled rotten. Also, they were very high maintenance. They were used to dining in fancy restaurants, having men buy them expensive gifts, going on expensive trips out-of-town, etc. In other words they had to be constantly wined and dined to make a good impression on them. So take it from me, dating an extremely beautiful single woman can turn out to not be all that great. But, you still can get lucky sometimes and meet a lovely woman who is beautiful on the outside as well as on the inside. This article written by Don Diebel (Americas #1 Singles Expert). Jobseekers! Look For Smoke, Not Fire

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

By Jim Stroud “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always received, said some wise person. This is certainly true when it comes to job-hunting, especially during a “sucky” economy. How many times have you applied to a job on Monster.com? Now ask yourself, “How many other people have applied for the same position?” The numbers are discouraging I assure you. Should this keep you from applying to jobs online? By no means, job boards are a necessary part of the process. However, if you limit your jobsearch to seeking only those jobs that you are qualified for then you are making a mistake. Am I suggesting that you do a “shotgun” effect with your resume and apply to as many jobs as you can hoping that by some miraculous twist of fate you catch a recruiter’s eye? No… and yes, in a way. Let’s put on our imagination cap for a minute and think of a horrific fire in a subdivision at the peak of rush-hour traffic. What is your immediate focus? The fire blazing bright? Sure… Are you concerned for the people in the subdivision? I hope so… “Now breathe deeply and concentrate,” I say in my Yoda voice. “See more, you will, young Jedi.” Could it be that you see smoke? Could it be that you hear a fire engine? Perhaps a helicopter with a reporter giving the TV viewers a scoop on what is happening? Perhaps there is another chopper for radio listeners? Perhaps in the distance are people who don’t know about the fire yet and are honking their horns and cursing the 5 o’clock commute? Perhaps all of this and more and why are they all there? Well, duh… they are all there because of a fire. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “What does all that have to do with my getting a job?” “Everything,” I say smugly. Let’s say that you are looking for a job as a network engineer. So what do you do? You look for Network Engineer jobs, which is a good start but not the finish. Consider the events and surroundings concerning your job and imagine what surrounds that job. Let’s see… to network computers, there must be a group of unconnected computers somewhere. For a group of unconnected computers to be sitting somewhere, that would mean that some salesperson had to sell them to somebody else. So, who sells the computers that I am qualified to connect? Why “Computer Company A” sells the kind of computers I am qualified to connect. Why don’t I call Computer Company A and ask for a friendly sales person? Perhaps with my powers of persuasion (and a little bribery of lunch), I can get him to tell me who his best customers are. I bet his best customers could use a network engineer to hook up all the machines they just bought. You like that? Let’s go deeper… New computers being connected suggest new office space. If I was going to buy new office space, who would I go to? Maybe I can call the leasing office of some business complexes and ask who handles their leasing. Maybe they can refer me to someone? Maybe they lease their own space and will give me a tip on companies looking to move into their space. A possibility… Better yet, I could pick up a copy of The Atlanta Business Chronicle (assuming you are in Atlanta) and review their real estate announcements to see who bought what. Whoever is buying lots of office space is someone I would want to talk to. Do I have your wheels rotating yet? The trick is not to look only for the fire (in this case, a network engineering job), but the smoke (those people who operate on the periphery of that job). Let me go a step even further. What happens after a fire has been put out? There is water damage, smoke damage, medical issues on occasion and so on. There has to be someone or some group of some ones to clean up the mess left behind. All that to say, as soon as one person gets hired somewhere, there is a possibility of an opening behind them. So, when you read in the paper about Company X has just signed on a new CIO formerly of Company Z, my advice is to call Company Z for a job. This is an especially good technique if you are an Executive, because many senior management types foster a “cult following” and bring other execs with them. (Happens all the time…) Does this go for executives only? No, this would be a good heads up for techies and marketing types as well. Why? New leadership means new processes and new processes often demand people to adapt or stand aside for new personnel who can. “Now let’s go deeper into the force,” I say in a bad Darth Vader accent. And imagine that you cannot imagine other positions that are connected to the job you are qualified for. Imagine that you are just clueless on how to think along these lines. (Anybody can draw a blank) For these folks I say, look for the recruiter jobs. If you see a company looking to hire Recruiters, Staffing Consultants, Internet Researchers (people who support recruiters by finding resumes online) or Online Sourcers (same thing as Internet Researcher), then that should sound like a cowbell at dinner time. If you are thinking to yourself, “Why should I care about HR jobs? That’s not my background.” I suggest that you slap yourself. Why would a company hire recruiters? They hire recruiters because they are about to load up on new employees! What kind of employees? Well, look at the kind of recruiter they want! Are they hiring technical recruiters? Sales recruiters? Executive recruiters? Ahh… I see the light bulb has just flashed over your head, you’re with me now. (Glad to meet you-wink). There is an old joke by a comedian named Robin Harris that says, “If you cannot get to the man, get next to the man that is next to the man. And if you can’t get him. Get next to the man that is next to the man that is next to the man and so on…” If you are feeling frustrated in your job-search, look beyond finding jobs that fit you, but rather seek out people connected to what you do. If you cannot connect with them, then connect with the person next to them and so on and so on and so on… About The Author Jim Stroud is a Recruitment Specialist and the author of “How Do I Find A Job When The Economy Sucks?” a collection of jobsearch strategies for people who need to work NOW! Depression Medicine

Friday, December 28th, 2007

By David McEvoy No one knows what causes depression and there are many variations in the way a depressive disorder can manifest itself. It isn’t possible to tell who is going to develop depression, and there is no way of knowing what medication might help or even exactly how each medicine works. What is known is that without assistance, it is possible for depression to continue for weeks, months or sometimes years and that medicine can help, but which one? Again, this will differ from person to person and with so many medicines available, both on prescription and over the counter, where do you start? The following represents a list of medicines commonly used to treat depression. Prescribed Medicines If you suffer from clinical or more severe forms of depression, then it likely that you will be prescribed medication by your Doctor. There are several different types available and these include Tricyclics (TCAs), Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), Serotonin and Noradrenaline Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRIs), Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs) and many others. All of them work in various ways to alter the activity of certain chemicals in the brain that have an impact on our mood and how we feel. Just as depression affects each individual differently, so too does the effect of any medication. After an assessment of your symptoms and the possibility of undesirable side effects, your Doctor will identify the most appropriate one to begin with and will probably start you on a low dose and if there is no change after a number of weeks, a higher dose or perhaps an alternative medication will be prescribed. Over the Counter Medicines There are many preparations on the market that can be bought over the counter, which are probably more suited to milder forms of depression but it is always important to discuss options with your Doctor first as even seemingly safe medicines can carry risks, particularly if you have other health problems and are already taking some form of medication. SAMe SAMe or S-Adenosylmethionine to use its full name, is a naturally occurring substance in the body that is involved in many biochemical processes. Research has shown that some people suffering from depression have lower levels than those who are not. SAMe appears to work by increasing the levels of neurotransmitters in the brain, for example, serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, all of which play an important role in determining our mood. One advantage of taking SAMe is that it can start to work quite quickly and has the added bonus of having fewer side effects than conventional medicine. St John’s Wort St. John’s Wort or Hypericum perforatum has increasingly been recognised for the beneficial effect it can have on mild to moderate depression. It appears to work, at least in part, in much the same way as Prozac by inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin. One of the main concerns with St. John’s Wort is that it does interact with many other drugs to produce some undesirable effects so it is particularly important to discuss the implications of taking St John’s Wort with your GP first. 5-HTP The full term for this is 5-hydroxytyptophan, which is a type of amino acid produced by the body that can be converted into serotonin. As well as lifting mood by increasing serotonin levels, it also appears to improve sleeping patterns, aids weight loss, and exerts a positive influence on many other physiological processes. It has been used to help alleviate the symptoms of migraine, insomnia and Fibromyalgia amongst others, but is most commonly used to help treat depression. Fish Oil People suffering from depression tend to have lower levels of Omega 3 fatty acids in their blood and supplementing with fish oil has been found to be effective in reducing the symptoms of depression and other mood related disorders including bipolar disorder and post natal depression. The most important Omega 3 fatty acids are Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), however, DHA is important for healthy structure of the brain but it is EPA that appears the most significant for healthy brain function on a day to day basis. EPA has powerful anti inflammatory properties, can increase serotonin levels and improve blood flow to the brain. Research indicates that fish oil with a high EPA content is better than standard fish oil containing lower ratios of EPA to DHA. Homeopathic Remedies There are a number of Doctors and other health professionals who also prescribe homeopathic remedies. Although it is possible to purchase homeopathic remedies over the counter, it is wise to seek the advice of a trained homeopath that will be able to take into account many other factors in order to give the most appropriate preparation. Homeopathy works on the philosophy that “like cures like” so that whatever causes the symptoms of a particular condition can be cured by the very same thing if given in a much diluted form. Examples of homeopathic remedies include Veratrum album, Natrium muriaticum and Ignatia, all of which can be used to treat depression. One of the main benefits of homeopathic remedies is that they are safe to use and you don’t have to discontinue other medications whilst taking them. The Homeopathic Association keeps a register of qualified doctors, nurses and dentists who are also qualified homeopathic practitioners. Depression and anxiety are serious conditions that can strike anyone at anytime. Depression

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

By Craig Burton There is no escaping it - Britain is fast becoming a Prozac nation! That’s the cold hard fact from The Independent newspaper today (Sunday 16th April). The article titled ‘Prozac Nation’ (Drugs crises: 3.5 million are on anti-depressants. Now ministers want to put Britain on the couch) reveals how GPs are stuck in the middle and forced to prescribe drugs as a ’second best’ treatment. With a recent survey finding 9 out of 10 GPs prescribing anti-depressants because of long waits to other mental health services like counselling. (1) That is a very sad predicament but an obvious question comes to mind (naturally of course since it is my field): but what about exercise as an alternative to treatment? In the following article I wish to put the case for exercise as one of the safest and most effective treatments for depression by addressing the following: 1. Current state of our mental health 2. Research behind exercise as an effective treatment 3. How exercise can benefit depressed people 4. Supporters of the exercise alternative 5. Who’s dropping the ball when it comes to passing on the message 6. Questions to consider before undertaking an exercise routine: 7. Conclusion 1. Current state of our mental health The figures are nothing short of alarming with anti-depressant prescriptions skyrocketing out of control by almost tripling in the last 12 years from 9.9 million in 1992 to 27.7 million in 2003, costing the NHS now nearly 400 million - that is a 2000 % rise from 1992. (2) 2. Research behind exercise as an effective treatment One Harvard study confirming the effectiveness of exercise showed that the relative risk of depression over a 25 year period was 27 % lower for men who played three hours or more of sport a week. (2) A recent study [09-13-05] carried out by Japanese researchers from Wakayama Medical University supports the use of exercise as a way to combat depression. The study was performed on 49 female volunteers between the ages of 18 and 20 who showed mild-to-moderate symptoms of depression. After eight weeks of participating in the study, the results showed a significant decrease in depressive symptoms in the group participating in the exercise regimen. Symptoms showed no change in the group receiving no exercise. (3) 3. How exercise can benefit depressed people According to the Mental Health Foundations booklet ‘Up and Running’ there is a number of ways exercise can assist those depressed: For starters we can get a natural high through exercise from a release of endorphins (chemicals that fight depression and increase our sense of joy and wellbeing) body. Exercise gives us a chance to meet new people and find support. A healthier self image is created through the benefits of exercise and the lifestyle changes that often go with it like more supportive eating. Exercise fills a void and creates a sense of purpose. (4) 4. Supporters of the exercise alternative When the Chief Medical Officer was asked whether exercise could play a role in combating the growing depression epidemic his answer was a resounding yes. He stated: ‘Physical activity is effective in the treatment of clinical depression and can be as successful as psychotherapy or medication, particularly in the longer term.’ (2) Television presenter Trisha Goddard, who has a predisposition to depression, says: ‘When studies revealed that exercise was a more effective way of handling depression that medicine alone, it wasn’t news to me. People often react with surprise when they hear how I’ve built a daily cross-country run into my life. I’m labelled an exercise fanatic, but I see what I do as a tried and trusted way of living with a predisposition of depression rather than suffering from it.’ (3) 5. Who’s dropping the ball when it comes to passing on the message So why isn’t this filtering to GPs? With the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) finding that only 5 % of GPs recommended an exercise programme (the Independent article raises no mention of exercise as treatment only Cognitive Behaviour Therapy). Well, for many people the ‘what to do?’ and ‘how to do it?’ can be daunting experiences like joining gyms. (2) Fortunately organisations like the Mental Health Foundation have been busy promoting the role of exercise. At the start of Mental Health Action Week 2005, the MHF launched a year-long campaign calling for patients with depression to be offered exercise on prescription. There are now many programs linked with the NHS and so as they say for more information, ask your local G.P. 6. Questions to consider before undertaking an exercise routine: What physical activities do I enjoy? Do I prefer group or individual activities? What programs best fit my schedule? Do I have physical conditions that limit my choice of exercise? What goals do I have in mind? (For example, weight loss, strengthening muscles, or improving flexibility or mood enhancement) 7. Conclusion Sometimes the most simple common sense solutions are the ones hardest to implement. Today we face epidemics like depression, obesity and preventable diseases and the need for regular exercise message is now greater than ever. Having been involved in teaching and prescribing exercise for over 10 years I have no doubt that regular exercise is one of the most powerful tools in overcoming depression, and promoting health and wellbeing. So naturally it is my drug of choice! No Jealousy Allowed

Tuesday, December 25th, 2007

By Julia Jones A healthy relationship is all about loving, caring and showing concern for each other. But at times such fine feelings and emotions turn into jealousy which is incorrect. Generally it is seen that when any of the partner acquires some kind of personal achievement the other partner feel happy for him or her but at times this is not the case. When either of the mates gets a promotion at work, or achieves a great feat then some of their partner feel a spark of jealousy. They feel inferior in front of the achiever and feel a sense of insecurity. Do you feel the same when your partner gets some kind of achievement? If yes then youd better change your attitude and talk about it to your partner. It will save your relationship from drifting. There are times when either of the partners does very well and moves on the ladder of success to fast in such times you feel left behind and ignored. Therefore you feel jealous and rejected. Well this could not be the real case, your partner not being able to give you enough time would be due to the busy schedule as with achievement responsibilities increase and you could be thinking the other way round. It is nothing but misunderstanding. You need to talk about it to get complete assurance from your partner. The partners need to trust each other as it the very base of a relationship. You should learn to be happy with the progress of your partner and have complete trust in him or her. If you really love your mate then his or her success will make you happy as you too will feel that success and move forward. Trust that your partner will not ignore you and will not forget you when he or she gets success in life. Talk to him and express your feelings. Communication is the way for solutions. Let your partner know what you feel on his success and why you feel like that. Your partner will understand you and comfort you giving assurance. You mate will appreciate your honesty. It is best to clear misunderstandings rather than spoil a relationship. Clear those clouds from your relationship and make it a bright and shining. Mostly we face disappointments as we expect too much from our partners and are unrealistic in our expectations. We should understand that to be professional and get success in work one has to pay for it and it is the family that has to make adjustments. This at times leads to a split in a relationship. Do not expect your man to hold your and keep loving you all day he has to go to work. Do not expect your woman to be working all day in the house she has her career to pursue. You need to give space to your partner and understand each other. You have to be realistic in your approach and not live completely in a romantic world. What To Do If Your Business Loan Is Approved

Monday, December 24th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Rebecca_Game]Rebecca Game Your business loan is approved. Congratulations! It’s one of the most exciting phone calls you can receive as a business owner. It means that your business has received the financing that you’ve desired for opening your new business or expanding your existing business. Obviously, a celebration is in order! However, before popping open that bottle of champagne and proposing a toast, remember a few key rules before signing on the dotted line and picking up your check. - Thoroughly review all loan documents, and understand what they mean before you sign and accept the loan when your business loan is approved. If you don’t understand something on the loan documents when your business loan is approved, ask the lender to explain. If you feel that the explanation was not clear, ask for further explanation, or ask that you receive a copy of the paperwork to take with you so that you can review, read, and research. Consult your attorney or accountant if you have questions. - Return all required documents to the lender on time when your business loan is approved. When your business loan is approved, there will be a number of documents and required paperwork that the lender will need before you can close on the loan. Your proposal and ideas were obviously impressive enough to the lender for them to them to tell you that your business loan is approved. Keep up that good impression that the lender has of you by promptly responding to requests for additional documents, information, and credit references. Once your business loan is approved and your money is in your account, you’re your time and review your business’ situation with care. - Turn to your business plan. Review the goals and objectives of your business, and review the information that you gave to the lender. The lender was impressed enough to offer you the money for your business - impressed enough that your business loan was approved. Refresh your memory regarding your business. Read your business plan weekly to keep these ideas continuously in your mind so that you can stay focused. Remind yourself daily why your business loan is approved. - Turn to your loan proposal. Yes, turn to your loan proposal. It seems odd to consider the loan proposal now that your business loan is approved, and now that the money is in hand. However, recall the reasons why you wrote the loan proposal and why you applied for the loan. The loan proposal served the purpose of demonstrating to the lender that you are a trustworthy, business-minded, energetic, responsible individual with a great idea for your business. The proposal also stated the items that would be purchased with the money. Review the ideas behind obtaining the loan. Keep your self-esteem levels high, and work only to succeed. Purchase only the items listed in the loan proposal, and use the money for nothing else when your business loan is approved. To find business success, stick to your initial goals for the loan, and maintain financial control of the money. Remember, you have not won the lottery. This money needs to be repaid in a timely manner. Additionally, lender communications are very important, and much appreciated by the lender, when your business loan is approved. - Maintain close contact with the loan officer when your business loan is approved. Before you close on the loan, keep in touch with the loan officer to let that person know of your progress in gathering your final information needed to close. After closing, check in periodically with the loan officer to fill him or her in on how things are going with your business. When your business loan is approved, the lender has a vested interest in both your personal and business success, and will appreciate your efforts in keeping communications open by offering current information about your business. Keeping the line of communication open will allow you to possibly take advantage of the lender’s other services, which may be needed by your business down the road. - Communicate any business problems to the lender immediately. Lenders don’t like surprises, particularly if it involves bad news. Be honest, and if you’ve run into a snag, inform the lender before anyone else. If you prosper, the bank will prosper. If you fail, the bank fails. By being open and honest if something doesn’t work out after your business loan is approved, the lender may be able to offer solutions or assistance to help you resolve your problems and get back on track. Hiding the problems, or worse yet, ignoring the problems or becoming elusive will only make the lender leery of you and your business, and may jeopardize your credit scores, or worse, your reputation as a business owner. Detox Your Way to Better Living

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Khieng Chho Given the rather toxic environment we live in today and the plethora of unknown substances and chemicals that are included and lodged in the things we eat, the water we drink and the air we breathe, it is necessary that everyone undergo some sort of detoxification program at one point in their lives to stay healthy. Most detox programs start with strict diets, which not just benefit and strengthen our blood circulation, kidneys, liver, bowels and lungs, but our general health in the long run. Getting Started, Slowly There are a number of detox plans you can take, but each one differs from the other in terms of how they are designed to cleanse your body. Some detox programs concentrate on flushing out toxins from your bowels, while some focus their attention on your liver, blood or skin. If you combine these detox plans, you will be able to jumpstart your bodily functions and restore your health to its maximum level. Why, you can even look a whole lot younger after. Of course, you have to combine your detox diet with proper exercise, rest and positive state of mind. Detox is equivalent to giving your body a break. By staying away from foods that are a challenge to metabolize and taunt your blood sugar levels, you will be able to generate enough energy required to regenerate and cleanse yourself. Your Liver is Your Best Asset Even if our bodies already have built-in detox systems, we still need to detox once in a while. The most important organ you should consider when thinking about starting a detox diet is your liver and how it will thank you dearly after. Our livers rarely complain when we abuse our bodies, but it is actually the most hardworking of all our internal cleansing organs. It produces heart, balances cholesterol levels, makes the bile we need to digest fat, processes proteins, stores vitamins and activates our hormones. Apart from the that, the liver also filters out all the bad elements we put into our bodies by drinking alcohol, smoking or inhaling chemical substances. While our livers can still function despite a lot of damage, once you’ve started feeling sluggish, digest poorly, have dull skin and start developing dark eye circles, it’s time to reward it for its hard work by undergoing a detox phase. Seek Help You can start your detox program by searching for information on the Internet or by asking your doctor for advice. Foods that aid in effective detoxification include those that are limonene-rich like lemons, or slightly bitter veggies like fennel, broccoli or artichokes. Water is also a no-fail beverage. But if you truly want to get the maximum benefits out of your detox plan, seek professional assistance. It is important to note, however, that people usually experience some form of nausea or headache while undergoing a detox process. This is because of the toxins released. If this happens to you, slow down on the program and start again very gradually. Your body will need to be properly primed and readied for the detox program so it can respond well. You simply can’t demand your body to cleanse itself immediately. Good health is not that difficult to achieve. You just have to keep your body healthy inside and out. Do this through proper exercise, enough rest and a healhty diet. Of course, a good detox program will also work wonders. Khieng ‘Ken’ Chho is author and owner of Online Detox Resources. Bible Study - The Gospel According to Mark 1:1-3

Saturday, December 22nd, 2007

By Clyde Annach The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark opens the book not with a formal declaration describing the purpose of the book but with a statement about the subject of the book. Let’s examine the first verse. 1. What is Mark by using the Greek word Arche (ar-khay’) which means for beginning, trying to get across to his readers? That he is writing about the start of the Gospel. 2. How does this differ from the beginnings in Genesis (1:1). The Genesis account is the creation of the world. Mark is talking about the fulfillment of God’s plan of redemption. 3. Why does Mark use language reminiscent of Genesis 1:1 to start his Gospel? As a reminder of God’s activity in the history of the world. 4. We have all heard that the word Gospel means good news, but just what is a Gospel? A Gospel is the telling of God’s plan for the redemption of fallen man. 5. What does Romans chapter 1 verses 2 through 4 tell us about the nature of a Gospel? The gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding his Son, who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 1:2-4 (NIV) John Calvin wrote a Gospel is a testimony of the revealed salvation, which has been formerly promised to the fathers in an uninterrupted succession of ages. It points out at the same time , a distinction between the promises which kept the hope of the people in suspense, and this joyful message, by which God declares that he has accomplished those things which he had formerly required them to expect. That is to say, an illustration of God’s stated plan of salvation and its fruition through time and eternity in Jesus Christ. 2 It is written in Isaiah the prophet: “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” 3 “a voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” Mark wrote his Gospel for Gentile believers, probably in Rome. Because they lacked knowledge of the Old Testament, he was not able to use quotations from it with any frequency. In verses 2 and 3 he makes an exception. The phrase Mark chose to start verse 2, it is written carries an authoritative quality recognized by Greeks, Romans and Jews. In the first century Greek world, this formula frequently opens the introductions to a law or legal declaration. In the Old Testament it would be recognized as claiming authority over the reader. 1. What is Mark saying about Isaiah by using the phrase It is written That Isaiah was an authority figure. That Isaiah’s authority came from God. Verses 2 and 3 are actually a collage coming from different sources. The quotation from verse 2, I will send my messenger ahead of you echoes the first part of Malachi 3:1. “Behold, I send my messenger and he will prepare the way before me. Malachi (3:1) (ESV) 1. What is God saying to Malachi who was looking forward and Mark who was looking backward to Christ by using the word See or Behold? This is coming from God Pay attention this is important This is what I want you to tell my people. 2. In both Mark 1:2 and Malachi 3:1 John is called my messenger, What is the ultimate message John is to pass along. The Messiah has come The Kingdom of God has come Verse 3 is a more exact representation of Isaiah 40:3. A voice of one calling: “In the desert prepare the way for the LORD; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God. Isaiah 40:3 (NIV). It was a common practice for Jewish teachers to combine texts or parts of texts, if they contained common keywords. Teachers were thought to be so learned in the scriptures that they were not required to specify which text or even mention its context. Verse 3, “A voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him.’ ” 1. Mark says the prophet was a voice of one calling in the desert, what was his calling to be? To prepare Gods people for His coming. 2. Based on what we know a Gospel to be, What was the Lord is coming to do? Restore the relationship between God and His people. 3. Reflecting back on verse 1, who does Mark say was coming? Jesus Christ God Himself. 4. Who then was coming to do what for whom? Jesus Christ was coming back to provide a path to salvation for God’s people. Verse 2, “I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way” Paraphrasing Malachi 3:1, Mark would have known that Malachi chapter 3 was about God coming in judgement to set things aright among His people. 1. What would this have meant Mark was trying to convey to his Gentile believers? Jesus was God He came and died for their sins Jesus coming meant the start of the Gospel age. In Luke 16:16-17 Jesus himself speaks of John’s role “The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John. Since that time, the good news of the kingdom of God is being preached, and everyone is forcing his way into it. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the least stroke of a pen to drop out of the Law.” Luke 16:16-17 (NIV) 1. What did Jesus say was inaugurated with John’s message? The Kingdom of God 2. How does it affect your thinking knowing the Kingdom of God includes the time since John? Clyde Annach is the operator of the Web Log Aha! Clyde’s been thinking again!
