Theres just so much to do that it can sometimes be hard to know where to begin! Well, relax. The harvest is in and putting your garden to bed, so to speak, is one of the more fun parts of gardening. You have a nice full cellar and pantry. The hard work is done, and you can relish the idea of preparing for next years garden. Which is the perfect place to start winterizing your garden. One of the first things you should do is clean all the debris from your garden. Get rid of dead foliage, leaves, roots, stakes and row markers. The debris you clean from your garden can be added to your compost heap which will be a big help come spring. You want to be sure, though, not to add any diseased debris or pest infected dead leaves or stalks in your compost pile. You dont want to accidentally spread a disease from this years garden to next years. And now that youre in cleaning mode, get out the rake and attack those fallen leaves scattered across your lawn. Why is it so important to remove leaves from your lawn? Because the grass underneath the leaves still needs all light it can get. Raking leaves from your lawn also lets adequate air and moisture get to living plants in your yard. After all, you dont want any of your lovely grass and plants to suffocate! Winterizing your garden also means mulching. You want to spread a light layer of mulch, just a few inches of it, around your trees and shrubs. This helps keep the underground temperature more stable throughout the winter, as well as offers much-needed protection to roots underneath the surface. When winterizing your garden, you will also want to take the time to plan next years vegetable garden. Take a pad with you out to the garden and make a sketch of where you want to put all your lovely vegetable plants in the spring. Doing this helps you make the most use of your garden area. By A.J. Klott With a dismal Spring Chinook season ready to come to an end, the early return of Rogue River Summer Steelhead has anglers brimming with hope. With over 4000 steelhead over Gold Rey Dam, (as of July 21st) angling for what many consider the crown jewel of Rogue River fish, has been consistent, if not downright HOT!! Reports of ten pound(or better) fish have been coming in,and these fish are aggressive and seem to be taking both bait and flies. As an extra bonus, with the lack of salmon fishermen lining the banks of the Rogue, the ultimate fishing experience is downright pleasant. I spent a day last week floating the upper Rogue and between our six fishermen we boated over 150 fish.The bulk of them were trout and half pounders, but our boat landed four steelhead over six pounds, with the largest a nice wild 30 inch beauty that had us doing a Chinese fire drill as we chased it down river. For those of you familiar with the summer run of steelhead on the Rogue, you know that fish much over 24 or 25 inches in July are pretty rare. So, to say that this early return of steelhead is encouraging, is quite the understatement. By Veronica Tran Originating out of Korea approximately 3 years ago, Eyelash Extensions have become an enormous hit with women of all ages across Asia, Europe, and now North America. The reason? The eyes are the first thing people see when looking at you, as well it’s what you see first in the mirror. With the extensions, your eyes appear bigger, brighter, more accentuated, and even downright sexy. Fans report looking already made up with just the lashes first thing in the morning, and feel no need for much makeup other than a little lip gloss. The process involves bonding lashes, synthetic or human hair, to your own with a special adhesive. Depending on the type of application, the lashes stay on for the life of your natural lash. Like the hair on your scalp, eyelashes all grow and shed at different stages. In general, a human lash will shed approximately every two months. Because of this, some lashes will shed sooner than others, which is why refill appointments are necessary to replace the lashes that have fallen out. The results are a bit more natural looking than the Flare application, with a look of a thick coat of mascara applied. This type of application is great for weddings and special events as it gives you a fairly dramatic look without going over the top. Human hair tends to frizz after a while, especially with frequent showers and heat. Because of this, these lashes generally last about 3-4 weeks, and up to 6 weeks with a refill. Application usually takes an hour long, price ranges from $75 - $150. 3. Synthetic Single Lash This type is the gold standard for lash applications. It is also the same type all the Hollywood celebrities are sporting. Looks can vary to fairy-like long & wispy, to full and thick, or it can be so natural looking that one cannot tell from two feet away. These lashes are painstakingly applied one by one. When done properly, there should be no clumping visible; lashes can be combed through with pointed tweezers, and will stay on until your own lash sheds. A quick application consisting of 20 lashes per eye will still take an hour, a normal application two, and three hours for a really full look. In Canada, the price range is between $135 - $350, however, in the U.S., expect to pay anywhere from $250 to $500. Which type of application is best for you? It would depend on whether you’re putting on these fun, flirty additions for an event or to wear long term. It is important that you discuss this with your technician prior to beginning the procedure. A good technician will explain to you the different types and give you a recommendation based on your needs. Beware of those who tell you that the flare applications can last you a month. It certainly can, but your lashes will not be in the same condition as before you had them on. If you are planning on wearing them on an on-going basis, then the synthetic lashes are the only type you should consider. By Karen Walker Although the intent of this series is to help the average woman develop the basic financial skills, there are people of both sexes, from all walks of life, that opt to allow others (or no one) to manage their finances. It may be ‘easier’ on the surface to be disconnected from the stress of financial management, but ignorance is not bliss when it comes to your money and your future. It is our sincere wish that everyone have a happy, wonderful life with none of the pitfalls inherent in our modern lifestyle such as divorce, job loss, illness and death. But unless your name is Cinderella, you need to understand that there are harsh realities you need to prepare for. This is not fiction we’re writing here. One of the first steps on your journey to financial security is to know what your present state of affairs is. Otherwise, how can you map out a success strategy if you don’t know where your starting point is? Even Dorothy had a starting point to escape from Oz. It may be unpleasant to face reality, but you gotta know. Make a file, a notebook- some kind of recordkeeping device that works for you. You can buy books for that purpose, use a computer program, whatever. The important thing is that it be comfortable and easy for you. Don’t add to your stress by trying to use a system that takes a lot of effort on your part to work with. My husband likes to do his recordkeeping on the computer but I prefer a notepad and simple accounting ledger. The next thing to do is find out how much money you have right now in cash, checking and savings accounts. If you are the bill payer for your household, this should be easy, but if you’ve not been involved in that process previously, you may encounter resistance, even suspicion. It may take a diplomatic effort on your part to reassure your mate that your intentions are honorable. Each partner in any domestic relationship has both a right and responsibility to participate in the financial processes of the partnership. Just as you wouldnt invest in a business then blindly allow someone else to control the money, it is unwise to invest in a relationship with fruits of your labor yet not have a hand in the investment process at home. When you think of investments, you may think stocks and bonds, but in truth, everything you spend money on is an investment. Buying groceries, paying doctor bills is an investment in your health. That big screen TV you’ve been wanting would be an investment in your entertainment. Getting up every day and going to work to earn a paycheck is an investment in your financial welfare. Paying bills is an investment in your good credit. Paying the electric bill is an investment in keeping the lights on. Instead of seeing things as expenses, consider them as investments. This is important as it programs your mind to see each expenditure as important and worthy of consideration. Just as there are good investments that benefit you in both the short and long term, there are poor investments that would rob you of your security. Investing paycheck dollars in alcohol down at the local pub night after night may be an investment in your entertainment, but it is a poor investment long term as the return on your investment would likely be unpaid bills, poor health, possible addiction, legal bills from DUI’s and a whole bunch of friends who spend a lot of their resources on that sort of thing as well. Spending money for unnecessary items just to satisfy your desire for something new falls into this category. So does paying with a credit card and racking up big bills if you can’t afford to pay them off in a timely fashion. Speaking stocks and bonds…and retirement accounts, anything considered an investment for the future, you need to know what the value is. This could be as simple as looking at the most recent statement of that account or if it’s your twenty year collection of Elvis dolls, having a competent, trustworthy appraisal done. You should make copies of all documentation and keep the originals in a safe place. This way you will have copies of the account numbers and a history record should it be needed. Be sure to include life insurance accounts in this search. Term life insurance does not accrue cash value, but it is good to know what you would have available to you if your loved one dies. Find out when the term of the insurance expires and what renewal options may exist. Whole life insurance accumulates a cash value over time as well. Next, find out exactly what your total monthly household income is. All payments should be considered, and a copy made of the most recent statements should be added to your file. Last but most importantly, is to find out where your money is going. Every last dime of it. Not only from the monthly bills, but everyday expenses. It’s not a lot of fun, but keep a little notebook handy for a month and track expenses. You need your partner to do the same as well or at least give you the receipts so you can track things. If you meet a lot of resistance, you may have to resort to asking questions, making estimates or, as a last resort, snooping around to find out. This may be the least desirable approach, but every cent that gets spent in your household is an investment in your future. You have the right to know. Once you have completed the information gathering process, you will begin to have an idea of your true financial health.
